In some Scandinavian countries an automatic fire extinguishing system is already prescribed for lorries and buses over 10t for first registrations. In order to fulfill minimum requirements, Sweden has provided the test guideline SBF128 for such mechanisms. According to these guidelines, the fire fighting system KE-H-D has been checked by the IBS - Institut für Brandschutztechnik und Sicherheitsforschung G.m.b.H. with several positive results of fire testing. The Video clip shows a test procedure on a regular bus MAN240. This was done as follows: Preperation: - 3 litre dry sawdust is soaked with a mixture from 50% diesel oil, 25% hydraulic oil and 25% engine oil. For an equal soaking it has been done 24 hours before beginning of the test. - 200 gram of cotton pulp is fully soaked with gasoline at least 5 minutes before the test starts. - 1.5 litres of a fluid mixture consisting of 60% diesel oil, 20% hydraulic oil and 20% gasoline has to be prepared. Preparation of the bus: At first the sawdust mixture is distributed equally in the engine compartment. Then the 1.5 litres of the fluid mixture is distributed over the engine and in the engine compartment with a spray gun. Last of all the 200g gasoline- soaked cotton pulp is placed as ignition source on at least two places. Test execution: The engine runs at least 15 minutes in idle to achieve operative temperature. Afterwards, the engine speed is increased to 1700-1800 rpm for 5 minutes. At this point, the ignition is executed at the ignition sources. The engine compartment must be on fire for at least 20 seconds before the system is released. The mechanism KE-H-D would have released automatically at each test after 12-15 seconds.
